Verizon will add more than 260 hybrid vehicles to its New Jersey fleet this year as part of its ongoing commitment to conserving fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to improved air quality in the communities it serves across the Garden State.

 In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, 12 nonprofit organizations across New Jersey have received $150,000 in grants from the Verizon Foundation to support technology-based programs that raise awareness of domestic violence and provide support to survivors.

Wafa House in Paterson is a support center that educates and assists victims of domestic violence and other social issues. The agency is dedicated to educating and empowering each member of the family, consequently cultivating a prosperous and healthy community. It fills a need by offering a variety of culturally sensitive human services to families, including, but not limited to, of Middle-Eastern and South-Asian backgrounds.

 The New Jersey Coalition for Battered Women (NJCBW) is a statewide association that provides leadership, support and resources on the prevention of violence against women in New Jersey through advocacy, training, public awareness and research.
They have 28 domestic violence organizations in New Jersey who are members and the coalition provides training, technical assistance and resources to those organizations. Among the programs provided are hotlines, shelter services, legal assistance, and children's programs.

 Domestic violence is a life-altering event for the victims. But the emotional trauma from it can sometimes be exacerbated when the victim is moved from one facility to the next to get the help they need.
Eliminating that frustration and confusion for the victim is what is behind the concept of the Family Justice Center. There, survivors of family violence and abuse can seek counseling, apply for a restraining order, get medical care and talk to police all in one place. The first one opened in San Diego, Calif., in 2002. Since then 55 more have opened including one in Essex County in downtown Newark - first of its kind in New Jersey.
